Discover St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans with this audio guide in English, exploring one of the oldest churches in the United States at your own pace.
Want to uncover the history and secrets of one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals in the United States at your own pace? Then book this audio guide in English for the majestic St. Louis Cathedral, the architectural jewel of New Orleans' iconic French Quarter.
Originally founded in 1718 and dedicated to King Louis IX, the first wood and adobe church went through a turbulent history and was completely destroyed by the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788. Rebuilt in stone in 1794, the building kept evolving until its major neo-Gothic remodeling in 1850.
As soon as you step through its imposing doors, you'll be surrounded by a peaceful atmosphere and artistic beauty that will win you over instantly. Your eyes will be drawn straight up to the spectacular vaulted ceilings, decorated with historic frescoes hand-painted in the 19th century.
You'll also be able to admire the dazzling carved wooden high altar and the intricate stained glass windows, which filter the light from the famous Jackson Square and tell the story of the life and deeds of King Louis IX.
With the help of a map, you'll wander at your own pace, discovering the cathedral's architecture, history, and colonial legends. Don't miss the funerary monuments of key figures from the colonial era, or the impressive pipe organ that dominates the choir loft.
Please note that entry to St. Louis Cathedral is free for all visitors. By booking this activity, you're purchasing the audio guide service in English, which will help you enjoy an enriching cultural visit at your own pace.
